1. What is SA8000?
Social Accountability International (SAI) is the development and implementation agency of the SA8000 standard (the social responsibility standard). Its predecessor was the Council on Economic Priorities (CEP) established in 1997. It is a long-term non-governmental organization that studies social responsibility and environmental protection and is headquartered in New York, USA. In 2001, it was renamed Social Responsibility International (SAI).
In the 1990s, overseas companies of some American companies exposed local workers to work under harsh conditions, causing protests from the American public, labor organizations, and NGOs. Under domestic pressure, US multinational corporations have formulated their own social responsibility codes, requiring their overseas companies and suppliers to comply. Subsequently, some internationally renowned brands have established their own social responsibility standards. This practice has gradually been adopted by multinational companies in other developed countries. Due to the differences in social responsibility codes among multinational corporations, their suppliers have to accept social responsibility audits based on different codes, greatly increasing the burden on multinational corporations. In order to unify the social responsibility code between enterprises, in June 1996, European and American business organizations and related organizations convened an initial meeting to formulate norms. The meeting unanimously agreed to develop an international standard for social responsibility that can be used for auditing. The predecessor of SAI was designated as the organization that maintains the new standards. The SA8000 standard was released in October 1997. In December 2001, SAI published the first revision of the SA8000 standard, SA8000:2001. The SA8000 standard is revised in principle every four years, and two years after the new standard is issued, certification guidelines based on the new standards will be issued.
